sliding scale pricing and trades

What is sliding scale?

Sliding scale pricing is a flexible range of prices that adjust to the needs and income of the client. This scale is not to be viewed as a discount, but as an opportunity for more people to experience and receive tattoos at prices that reflect individuals needs. Paying according to one’s available resources provides a more equitable, accessible and sustainable community while also allowing fair compensation to the artist.

Please consider the following when deciding how much to pay:

Consider paying more on the scale if you:

✿ have access to money and resources in times of need (your own or your family’s).

✿ have a higher degree of earning power due to level of education, gender privilege, racial privilege, class background, etc.

✿ own land, have investments, retirement accounts, or inherited money.

Consider paying less on the scale if you:

✿ are denied work due to your identity, citizenship status, or incarceration history.

✿ experience harm due to systemic racism, ableism, and/or transphobia.

✿ have a large amount of medical or immigration debt/expenses.

✿ are a sex worker, community organizer, or supporting children/dependents.

✿ are an elder with limited financial resources.

✿ are financially relying on government assistance.

Dayze’s Rate:

✿ $125-200 per hour. This rate helps me support myself, and allows me to continue offering accessible tattoos to community.

What happens if we go over the estimated time?

It’s not uncommon to go over the time I estimated in my original booking email. If we are able to continue tattooing, that is my preference, and if not, then we can schedule another session for 2+ weeks away to give your skin time to heal before a second session.

Because my rate is an hourly sliding scale, I will honor the low end of the scale that I originally quoted you, and raise the high end of the scale to the actual amount of time we spent tattooing. For example, if I quoted 2 hours $250-$400 sliding scale, and we actually ended up tattooing for 3 hours, the new price would be $250-$600 sliding scale. I don’t want to put unexpected costs on you. The price in our original agreement is what I am happy to be paid, even if it takes longer than expected!

Transparency:

Sliding scale models have been adapted and altered over and over again. Two structures that I have adapted from:

Open Apothecary, a CBD shop based in San Diego, CA.

A.B. Moore, a tattoo artist based in Portland, OR.

Trades:

If full financial reciprocity is inaccessible to you, I am occasionally able to support a trade of a tattoo in exchange for your offerings. Trades can be full or partial, depending on prices and my financial capacity for this form of reciprocity.
I’m especially drawn to: custom/handmade clothing, healing sessions, plants/medicine/herbs, tattoos, ceramics, jewelry, photo/film, skill share.
If you are seeking a trade, please include in the note section of my booking form: your offering and the price range you would ideally like to trade for.
